Computer security is a fundamental requirement for the proper functioning of all information systems. In recent years there have been many detected incidents that aim to exploit the most diverse vulnerabilities of computer systems and, consequently, unauthorized access to information.

Portugal is not exception on this matter and one of the most recent targets was the Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada, near Lisbon.

Sources reveal the hospital was targeted by a computer attack in late 2016. The attack focused on the system where medical images such as X-rays or TACs are stored, but the unit ensures that no patient’s records were stolen.

The details of this case are not yet known, but it is suspected it was a ransomware attack. Hospital sources told that in recent months there has been a reinforcement of back-up of the records in the unit, with doctors having to request more images stored on servers other than those that are commonly used.
